What Is The Difference Between Precision Forgings & Conventional Forgings?

Precision forging stands apart from conventional forging due to several key factors that enhance its performance and application. Unlike conventional forgings, which often require extensive machining to achieve the desired surface finish, precision forgings are crafted with much finer tolerances. They typically feature minimal draft angles (ranging from 0 to 1 degree), thin cross-sections, tight tolerances, and superior surface finishes.

While the tooling for precision forging can be more expensive to develop and maintain, the benefits it offers are significant. One of the main advantages is the near-net shape it produces, reducing the need for additional machining and allowing parts to be ready for use with minimal further processing. Furthermore, precision forgings exhibit an optimal grain structure that enhances their fatigue resistance and offers better performance under stress. This superior grain alignment also improves resistance to intergranular corrosion, ensuring a longer service life and higher reliability in demanding applications.
